BGIS has been providing integrated facilities management services to the corporate real estate industry since 1992. I joined the company five years later in 1997, when the real estate management outsourcing industry in Canada was still relatively nascent. Since then, our industry has evolved considerably and the solutions that are available now span the full life cycle of a real estate portfolio from strategic planning and acquisition through to construction and ongoing operations and maintenance.
Over the past 24 years, we have broadened our business significantly. What started as an FM-only business in Canada and Australia/New Zealand has become a leading integrated real estate services company with global reach. In North America, BGIS manages over 200 million square feet and our diverse client base and extensive portfolio includes over 20,000 client locations.
Our service offerings cover the entire spectrum of support needs for our clients’ real estate portfolios. We provide:
- Facilities Management services for office, retail, industrial, critical environments, institutions and other specialty facilities.
- Project Management for new builds, renovations and building systems, HVAC and general trades services.
- Workplace Solutions including workplace planning and strategy, design, occupancy management, change management and technology.
- Professional Services such as sustainability and building energy efficiency consulting, utility bill pay and analytics, building condition assessments, capital planning and engineering.
- Real Estate Services such as brokerage and lease administration.
It is my belief that the greatest opportunity for value creation occurs when services are integrated. This is the primary reason for our continued investment in the development of existing and new capabilities and why we constantly look to grow our business and broaden our services both horizontally and vertically. It is our goal to continue to provide our clients with skill, scale and expertise all in one place, so they can focus on running their core business.
At BGIS, we are committed to leading the CRE industry to a more sustainable future. Commercial buildings in North America account for almost 32 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions, consume 837 billion litres of municipally treated water and, on average, each building generates close to 15.6 million tonnes of solid waste per year, providing us with a tremendous opportunity to have a positive impact on environmental sustainability. Our team is committed to finding new ways to operate buildings more efficiently, reducing waste and reducing costs for our clients. We have proven that a focus on waste reduction drives significant economic benefit; debunking the myth that one must choose between sustainability and economic viability.
I am pleased to report that since committing to sustainable operating practices in 2006, our team’s efforts as North American leaders in sustainability have resulted in the reduction of millions of tonnes of CO2e from the atmosphere, conserved millions of litres of water and diverted thousands of tonnes of waste from landfill sites across the country. All of this was accomplished while contributing net savings to our clients operating costs in excess of $100 million dollars.
A cornerstone of our operating philosophy is that BGIS must “give back” to its communities. Through our Corporate Social Responsibility programs, we have raised and donated several million dollars to charitable organizations. With the help of our dedicated team members, we have set a goal for our company to contribute the equivalent of a minimum of one percent of our earnings to supporting the communities in which we work and live. Through fundraising activities, industry education events and volunteerism, BGIS is serious about making a difference in the lives of people across North America and around the world.
