A Q&A with Patty Anderson, VP at BGIS

What are some of the main challenges that data centers face when it comes to energy consumption and sustainability, and how can IoT and AI be used to address these challenges?

The main challenges that data centers face in terms of energy consumption and sustainability are high energy costs, carbon footprint, and inefficient resource utilization. IoT and AI can help address these challenges by enabling real-time monitoring and analysis of data center operations, optimizing energy usage, and improving resource allocation.

Can you give an example of how IoT devices can monitor and optimize energy consumption in a data center, and what kind of data would need to be collected and analyzed?

IoT devices can monitor and optimize energy consumption in a data center by collecting data on energy usage, temperature, humidity, and airflow. This data can be analyzed to identify patterns and anomalies, enabling data center operators to optimize energy consumption and identify areas for improvement.

How can AI be used to predict and prevent equipment failures in a data center, and what benefits does this offer in terms of energy efficiency and sustainability?

AI can be used to predict and prevent equipment failures in a data center by analyzing real-time data from sensors and other devices. By identifying potential issues before they occur, AI can help prevent downtime and reduce energy waste caused by inefficient equipment.

Can you discuss some key security considerations when implementing IoT and AI solutions in a data center, and how these challenges can be addressed?

When implementing IoT and AI in a data center, security considerations include ensuring secure data transfer, protecting against cyber attacks, and managing access control. These challenges can be addressed by implementing secure communication protocols, encryption, and multi-factor authentication.

What kind of skills and expertise are required to implement IoT and AI solutions in a data center successfully, and how can organizations ensure that they have the right talent in place?

Implementing IoT and AI solutions in a data center requires data analysis, programming, and networking skills. Organizations can ensure they have the right talent by investing in training and development, partnering with external experts, and recruiting skilled personnel.

How do you see IoT and AI evolving in the data center space over the next 5-10 years, and what new technologies and approaches do you expect to emerge?

Over the next 5-10 years, we can expect to see advancements in edge computing, machine learning, and 5G networks that will enable more efficient and effective data center operations.

How do you balance the need for automation and optimization with maintaining security and control over critical data center infrastructure?

Balancing automation and optimization with security and control requires robust monitoring and control systems, secure communication protocols, and regularly testing and updating security measures.

How can IoT and AI be used to make data centers more sustainable and efficient and improve the overall reliability and availability of the infrastructure?

IoT and AI can improve the reliability and availability of data center infrastructure by enabling predictive maintenance, real-time monitoring, and intelligent resource allocation.

Can you discuss any real-world examples of organizations that have successfully implemented IoT and AI solutions in their data centers, and what kind of benefits they have seen?

Real-world examples of successful implementation of IoT and AI in data centers include Vigilent, which uses machine learning to optimize data center cooling. We have successfully implemented the Vigilent System for many of our customers, improving equipment performance, ensuring temperature management and compliance, and reducing risk to the data center space and IT Assets while delivering energy savings and improving the client's carbon footprint.

Finally, how do you see the role of IoT and AI in data centers fitting into broader trends toward digital transformation and the adoption of cloud technologies?

IoT and AI are critical components of digital transformation and the adoption of cloud technologies, as they enable organizations to optimize their data center operations and improve their overall efficiency and sustainability.
